India Gets 'Air Force One'

India inducted three hi-tech executive jets that will be used to fly VVIPs like the president and prime minister within the country.

Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee inducted two of the 135BJ Legacy jets made by Brazil's Embraer into the VIP Squadron of the Indian Air Force (IAF) during a ceremony at the Palam airbase in New Delhi.

The third jet was inducted into the aviation wing of the paramilitary Border Security Force and will be placed at the disposal of the home ministry. Home Minister Shivraj Patil too was present at the induction ceremony.

India ordered five Legacy jets from Embraer at a total cost of Rs.7.5 billion ($170.9 million). Three jets were delivered by the Brazilian firm last month.

The Legacy jet, inducted as a replacement for the ageing Avro aircraft, was selected from a host of contenders mainly for the value for money it offers, an IAF spokesman said.

The Legacy has a maximum ramp weight of 22,570 kg and a maximum fuel capacity of 8,300 kg. It can carry 10 passengers to a maximum range of 3,100 nautical miles at a cruise speed of 0.78 Mach.

Its cabin volume of 40 cubic metres offers space for seating 12 passengers, including four in the VIP cabin.

"With a take-off distance of 1,800 metres and landing distance of 1,400 metres, it can operate from most airfields in India and abroad," the spokesman said.

The cockpit has a modern flight management system, global positioning system and other navigation systems.

"The features of glass cockpit and auto flight systems are in keeping with modern trends of cockpit instrumentation and mark the beginning of the much-needed modernisation of the IAF transport fleet," the spokesman said.
